Game Research Blog 10: History of Exergames

One aspect of exercise video games that I wanted to include at least briefly in my research paper on the effectiveness of physical activity was a short description of the history of exercise video games.  I didn’t know how far back exercise video games went back, and I could probably do an entire research paper on this topic alone, but I felt it was important to at least briefly mention some of the predecessors to todays exergaming systems like the Wii and Kinect.  One of the early pieces of technology in exercise video game history that I found interesting was the Nintendo Power Glove.  Although the Power Glove is regarded as too sophisticated for its target market, it’s defiantly an interesting piece of gaming technology. Here’s a link to a commercial for the Power Glove:

  1. For my project, I am investigating the controversies following the crossroad of immersion in video games and violence and the misunderstandings of desensitization. This is a very immersive technology that I did not come upon but will most likely integrate within my project. The Power Glove stimulates the use for physical activity and exemplifies the definitions for immersion, but did this have any repercussions on the ideas of violence in video games? Just because there were classic graphics and 8 bit images makes it only slightly different than the modern games like UFC fighting games. For its time, it was as immersive as the Oculus Rift and Virtuix is for today. There is a lot of good this nintendo glove can do though. Just as someone can play a boxing game and shoot a gun, there are other applications that this power glove can have that may be a little past its time. Things like the power-glove are used today in surgical training and other medical practices in order to not have to use cadavers and patients. This technology was one of the early steps in a major technological breakthrough that tied the fields of video games, medicinal practice, and virtual reality together. I am truly grateful you came upon this, as an avid gamer I had no idea this even existed and it boggles me that I didn’t.

  2. Wow, that’s a great topic that is sure to be of great relevance for todays and future gaming. I am glad that you will be able to integrate the Power Glove in your assignment, and I too am curious as too the implications this device had regarding ideas towards violence during its time. Immersive gaming and violence have been a hot topic recently in our society, and its kind of weird to think of these devices that have been around for two and a half decades to have an impact on these same issues of today. I too have not heard of the Nintendo Power Glove before doing research, and am glad this will also help you with your project!
